Sumati Morarjee holds the distinction of being the first woman in the world to head a ship owners’ organisation. Known fondly as the first woman of Indian shipping, she headed the Indian National Steamship Owners Association from 1946 and for her civil services, in 1971, she was awarded India’s second highest civilian honour, Padma Vibhushan.
