For an enjoyable easy hike with spectacular views of an alpine lake, Oeschinensee is at the top of my list. A trip here is suitable for children, babies in strollers and the elderly. You could go on a day trip to the lake, or even combine it with a weekend getaway in Kandersteg.

Getting there is very straight forward. Take the train to Kandersteg. From the train station, walk for 15 minutes; or take the 8-minute bus ride to the cable car station. Follow the signs in the town. The price for the cable car ride is CHF 26.00 (return ticket) for adults. Children go free.

After taking the cable car up to the last stop, you will begin the walk roughly about 2 km on a stroller friendly trail down to the the lake. The walk could take you anywhere between 25-45 minutes. For those who only want to make a one-way trip on foot, there is an environmentally friendly UNESCO Electromobile that makes daily trips on the half-hour. Price for adults CHF 8.00 per trip and for children up to 12 years of age, it is CHF 5.00 per trip.

For the hungry and thirsty traveller there’s a restaurant above the lake. From here you can take in the pristine blue views, whilst basking in the glorious sunshine on the terrace. The lake below is shrouded by mountain peaks and makes you appreciate the alpine grandeur in all its glory.
