In our language corner, we bring to you phrases that you can use in your everyday life in Switzerland. There are four official languages in Switzerland – German, French, Italian, and Romansch. In this issue, we bring you phrases that help you with conversation ideas in two languages spoken in Switzerland.

Situation: A is a person from a foreign country and B is Swiss. A wants to know a bit more about Easter and B explains it.

English

A: Hi!
B: Hello!
A: I would like to know more about Easter. Can you tell me a bit more about the festival?
B: Yes, sure. Easter is the day when Jesus Christ was resurrected and came back to earth. But more than that, it is also a cultural holiday where we hide colored eggs for the kids to find. Some people like going to church. There are also many rabbit-shaped chocolates in the shops. So, Easter marks the beginning of spring.
A: Ahh, I see. Are you going somewhere with your family?
B: Yes, I am going to see the Sakura flowers in Japan since the kids have holidays for two weeks. They bloom around this time. Are you going somewhere too?
A: I love cherry blossoms. But thank you for telling me about Easter. I’m planning to go to the Netherlands to see the tulips and also buy some of those rabbit-shaped chocolates.
B: Enjoy your trip to the Netherlands and Happy Easter!
A: Thank you and you too have a great time with your family. Bye.

A: Ich habe gehört, dass es bei euch ein Festtag namens Ostern gibt. Könntest du mir etwas darüber erzählen?
B: Ja voll, Ostern ist der Tag, an dem Jesus auferstanden ist. Aber, es ist für uns ein kultureller Feiertag, wo wir einige Tage frei haben. Wir verstecken bunte, farbige Eier im Haus, damit die Kinder es finden können und manche Leute gehen an diesem Tag gerne in die Kirche. Ausserdem, gibt es in den Läden viele Schokoladen, die wie Hasen aussehen. Ostern markiert den Anfang vom Frühling.
A: Ahh, ich verstehe. Also hast du vor, mit deiner Familie irgendwo zu reisen?
B: Ja, ich gehe mit meiner Familie nach Japan um die Sakura Blumen zu sehen. Diese blühen genau um diese Zeit. Die Kinder haben zwei Wochen lang Schulferien. Und du? Hast du auch etwas vor?
A: Ich liebe Kirschblüten. Ich glaube, ich werde nach Niederlanden gehen, um mir die Tulpen anzuschauen. Natürlich kaufe ich mir davor die Schokolade, von der du mir erzählt hast.
B: Na dann, wünsche ich dir schöne Ostern und viel Spass bei deiner Reise!
A: Danke und dir auch schöne Ostern und viel Spass.
B: Danke, Tschüss

B: Bonjour.
A: J’ai entendu que vous avez une fête – Les Pâques. Est-ce que tu peux me dire quelque chose sur ça ?
B: Oui, bien sûr. Alors, les Pâques est une fête où Jésus a été resuscité. De plus, il s’agit d’une fête culturelle où nous cachons des œufs colorés partout dans la maison et les enfants doivent les chercher. Il y a aussi des chocolats qui sont comme des lapins dans les magasins. Quelques personnes vont à l’église et les Pâques marquent le début du printemps.
A: Je vois. Va tu aller quelque part avec ta famille ?
B: Oui, je vais voir les fleurs de Sakura au Japon avec ma famille parce que les enfants ont des vacances pendant deux semaines. Et toi ?
A: J’adore les fleurs de Sakura. Moi, je pense d’aller aux Pays Bas pour voir des tulipes. Mais avant, je vais acheter les chocolats.
B: Ben, je te souhaite des bons Pâques et au revoir !
A: Merci, pareillement, au revoir.
