Alfred Escher, yes, the same guy whom you see when you get out of the Zurich main station in the direction of Bahnhofstrasse is one of the key men behind the Swiss railway system. Not just that, in 1856 he started the Schweizerische Kreditanstalt in order to fund the railway system, which we know today as Credit Suisse.
