The Irishman Charles Barrington owned and trained a racehorse, ‘Sir Robert Peel’ that has the distinction of winning the first Irish Grand National in 1870. Prior to that, in 1858, Barrington accompanied by two Swiss guides Christian Almer and Peter Bohren made the first ascent to Eiger via the West flank.
