During the French Revolution (1792), the Swiss Guards were assigned to protect Louis XVI and his family. Although the family escaped, the soldiers held their ground and were overwhelmed by the opposition that resulted in the death of hundreds of Swiss guards. A monument designed by Bertel Thorvaldsen commemorates this tragic event and we know it as the Lion Monument in Luzern.
