Jorge Chávez was a Peruvian aviator and after whom the international airport in Lima is named. He is known to be the first aviator to have made the successful crossing over the Alps (1910) when he took the flight from Brig to Domodossola. Unfortunately, he crashed upon landing, and before he died four days later, he was awarded a prize and he managed to share the details of his flight. There are monuments and memorials honouring Chávez in Brig and Domodossola.
