Bishnoi is a community that is found mostly in the north and northwestern regions of India. They follow a set of 29 principles given by Guru Jambheshwar (in the 15th century), eight of which focused on preserving biodiversity. The word ‘Bishnoi’ translates to ‘twenty-nine’.
