In our language corner, we bring to you phrases that you can use in your everyday life in Switzerland. There are four official languages in Switzerland – German, French, Italian and Romansch. In this issue, we bring you phrases that help you with conversation ideas in two languages spoken in Switzerland.

Language makes a big statement: it shows that you accept Swiss culture and are making an effort to integrate. Use the language. Show that you care! You can also take a look at the Swiss education system here and check out higher education options in this article.

Here are a few conversational phrases you can use while talking about college admissions.

(P is for Parent, C is for colleague)

 

English

P: Hey, how are you?

C: Good, and you?

P: Yes, I am fine. Listen, my child will be finishing school soon and I am looking for a suitable university that matches her interests. I was wondering if you could give me some advice.

C: Alright, what subject is your child interested in and what does she want to study?

P: My child is interested in economics as well as languages, so she is a bit confused as to where she should go for higher studies.

C: It really depends on what your child is actually interested in. If she has an inclination towards languages then the university of Zurich or Basel is a good place. If she is interested in studying Business and Economics, then it is better for her to study in the University of St. Gallen. They have the best business courses in the country. But as far as I know, if your daughter wants to take both, then I suggest that you book a consultation with the University of Zurich, and she should be able to take both subjects in one university.

P: Interesting. I have another question: How much does it cost?

C: It is very reasonable, about CHF600-800 per semester, depending on the University.

P: Okay, I will talk to my daughter about this. Thank you very much for your advice and have a nice day.

C: Thank you, you too!

P: Ja, mir auch. Also hör mal, mein Kind wird ihre Matura bald abschliessen und ich suche nach einer passenden Uni, die ihren Interessen entspricht. Dabei habe ich mir gedacht, ob du mir einen Rat geben könntest.

C: Okay, was interessiert dein Kind? Und was möchte sie studieren?

P: Sie ist in Sprachen und Ökonomie interessiert und möchte beides studieren. Sie ist also ein bisschen verwirrt an welcher Uni sie studieren soll.

C: Na ja, es kommt darauf an, wo die Interessen deines Kindes liegt. Falls ihre Interesse mehr zu Sprachen neigt, dann wäre die UZH oder Uni Basel eine gute Möglichkeit. Aber wenn sie lieber Ökonomie und Wirtschaft studieren möchte, dann würde ich ihr raten, die Uni St. Gallen zu besuchen (in this context not to visit, but to go and study). Sie haben die besten Angebote, in der ganzen Schweiz was Ökonomie und Wirtschaft angeht. Aber, so viel ich weiss, könntest du eine Beratung bei der UZH buchen und sie sollte eigentlich beide Fächer belegen können.

P: Aha, interessant, was sind die Kosten?

C: Die Studienkosten sind sehr mässig, ungefähr siebenhundert bis achthundert Schweizer Franken pro Semester, je nach Universität.

P: Okay, also dann werde ich mit meiner Tochter über dieses Thema reden. Vielen Dank für deine Ratschläge. Ich wünsche dir noch einen schönen Tag.

C: Danke, gleichfalls. Tschüss.

P: Salut! Ça va?

C: Bien, et toi?

P: Très bien, alors, écoute, mon enfant est en train de finir sa scolarisation et je cherche maintenant des universités pour elle qui sont en accord avec ses intérêts. Peux-tu me donner des conseils ?

C : Ben, quoi veux ton enfant étudier ? Quels sont ses intérêts ?

P : Elle s’intéresse à l’économie, mais aussi aux langues et voudrait étudier tous les deux si possible. Elle est donc un peu confuse et pense à quelle université elle devrait aller.

C : ça dépend d’intérêts de ta fille. Si elle est plutôt fascinée par des langues, l’Université de Zurich ou Bâle serait une bonne option. Pour l’économie et le business, je conseillerais l’Université de St. Gallen car ils ont des meilleures courses à ce qui concerne le business. Si ta fille veut étudier les deux, je te conseillerai d’avoir une consultation avec l’Uni de Zurich, car je sais qu’on peut y prendre l’économie et les langues ensemble.

P : Intéressant. Quels sont les frais d’études ?

C : Les frais sont pas trop cher. Ça dépend d’université, environ entre sept-cent et huit-cent francs par semestre.

P : D’accord, je vais parler avec ma fille sur ça. Bon, merci pour tes conseils. Au revoir et bonne journée.
